The LVRC FGH National Criterium Championship 2014

Promoted by Alistair Cameron on the York Sports Village Cycle Circuit

Assisted by Andrew Johnston(York Sports Village), Chevin Cycles.com and LVRC friends

First aid was provided by Yor-Med

The championships were run off all day as 6 separate events:  A thro’ to E cat as single cat events. We senior riders (FGH) were put together in the first race starting at 9-30. All races were run on a time (1Hr) +5 laps basis on the 1k circuit. The weather was overcast initially, with some light rain at the start which fortunately cleared fresh westerly breeze making the finishing run extremely fast and the return leg hardish.

It was my first time on this custom built circuit and I found it very easy to ride with a good wide well surfaced road although a little tight making all the bends excluding the top loop easily negotiable.

In the F,G, H ‘old men's’ race there were 26 starters and after the early rain I was more confident of doing a reasonable ride. For the first two laps the pace was fast but cautious, everyone getting used to the circuit. Then the action started with a lone attack by Richard Booth, he was left to stew out there for two or three laps hoping to induce someone to come across to form a break but inevitably was brought back into the fold. After a few more laps nothing serious was let go and the bunch) started to fragment at the rear. As usual, of late, I got caught out and found myself distanced with several others. I started a chase ending up solo and did about 5 laps alone, before catching two others, Roly Crayford and Nick Selibas. We worked well together but the task was impossible and eventually drifting further back we were lapped with about 6 to go. We three sat at the rear keeping out of the way, Roly defending his H position (Jack Watson was still up there as 1st H), I had no chance now as there were at least 4 G riders in the main field. Coming into the final lap there was a mad scramble around the top bend, Dave Gretton squeezing through and Geoff Cooke ending up on the grass with Mick Allen and others also obstructed. Observing this melee from the rear I saw Alan Kemp attack from Dave Gretton 250 metres out and just ride away ‘Cavendish style’ from the rest to take a splendid F cat and race win.

I must say I was impressed by the world class track sprinter Geoff Cooke riding a rare road event, who was up at the front the entire race and would surely have got at least a placing.

This venue is an excellent facility for all sports and indeed there is an almost completed 250 metre outdoor track adjacent to the circuit. I only hope that our weather allows it to get more use than is usually possible in our short wet, cool summers. It is such a shame that a similar circuit planned near the new indoor track, almost completed, at Derby, my home city, has been put on hold

Race positions: 1, Alan Kemp, 2: Dave Gretton, 3: Allan Ramsey, 4: Mick Allen.

F cat, 1, Alan Kemp, 2, Allan Ramsey, 3, Mick Allen

G cat 1, Dave Gretton, 2, John Ginley, 3, Jeff Hardy
