The LVRC GH National Road Championship 2014

Promoted by Mike Twelves on the Napton-Priors Marston Circuit

Assisted by Jewson and team members and LVRC friends

The championships were run off  as 3 separate events:  E,F and G/H. We senior riders (GH) were put together in the last race starting 5 mins after the F event.  Travelling down with Belper clubmate Bill Cotton The weather was overcast but not yet raining, on reaching Leicester the inevitable edge of the forecasted  storm  had now reached this far north.

On arrival at race HQ it was raining steadily and I was not looking forward to it, however as usual Bill and I reluctantly prepared for the foray. Before leaving the changing rooms to line up outside Richard Booth made me smile saying ” there was enough material in there to keep any psychiatrist happy for the rest of the year”; you know he was so right.

There were approx 14 starters  and we were led onto the circuit and up the finishing hill where the flag was dropped. The initial pace was fast but manageable and I was trying to recall my previous outing on this tough circuit. All was OK until we hit Priors Marston for the first time. Bob Richards drove hard followed by Geoff Wiles and a group of 4 others, I was struggling, overgeared, and lost contact after the sharp bend halfway up along with Jeff Hardy, Mick Ives and Bill Rains. Over the top I came round  and in a big gear drove hard to try and regain the front following Jeff Hardy who we soon caught , With Mick and Jeff we managed to hold the front group at 100 meters, Bill had not made it and disappeared. At the serious end of the race Geoff Wiles was riding easily and although I’m not exactly sure of where the next actions occurred . He, Brian Sunter and John Ginley went clear, Bob Richards, Tony Woodcock and Ron Bennet could not follow.  Tony then made a superb effort and managed to regain the front leaving the other two. At the finish Geoff Wiles easily rode away from his companions with Tony taking second and John Ginley beating team mate Brian Sunter to the line. Ron Bennett and Bob Richards finished some distance behind these and then Mick Ives and I followed after another gap. Last finisher was Dave Duke and Del Stacey.  This former paragraph maybe a little inexact but the result is correct.  Meanwhile at the back after 3 miles of effort I realised that we were not going to get across and so resigned to a steady through and off hoping that the front would ease: some hopes!  by now the rain was coming down hard but fortunately at this stage didn’t feel too cold. Reaching the finish area Jeff decided to throw in the towel which I should have done as well. However as Mick Ives (now an H cat and on his birthday too) I decided to play the domestique role and both of us set to and rode the rest of the race together. We caught a tail ender from the F group on lap two when the rain was lashing down, he too didn’t try and get on, so there was no help to ease the pain. On the final lap I was now feeling the cold badly and was just going through the motions and hitting Napton for the last time I signalled for Mick to ride on as I wanted to ride to the finish at my own pace, boy was I glad to cross the line.

Mick Ives obviously took the H cat race from Del Stacey.

I have to admire all the  riders including me for finishing in such diabolical conditions. It would surely not be an advised  exercise for anyone of our age group. But then it’s a tough sport and we’re hard but In future I will stick to the track for my major efforts.

Many thanks to all the marshalls who had an even more unpleasant day out than us, and also to Mike Twelves for putting on such a brilliantly organised race.
