Darley Moor Circuit Race August 30th. 2014

Promoted by Andy Donaldson Kingsnorth International

The second of a series of 3 events, EFGH event (1 hour + 3 laps) approx. 25 miles.

Many thanks to once again to Andy Donaldson and his team,  I think that Andy deserves a vote of thanks for travelling down from Huddersfield to promote on this circuit, so I reiterate to all out there come and test it at the next event  being run by him on the 6th. September.

Being promised a fine day by the meteorological office I decided this time to ride out with club mate Martin Harris, who now is getting used to en ligne racing, but again it was overcast and windy. The wind direction was in the same westerly direction making the finishing straight a mainly helpful crosswind, the second leg a tailwind and the third damn hard again. The track was damp in places at the start but soon dried out in the hazy sunshine.

There was a reasonable field of just under 30 riders which is small for the width of the road on this circuit, but extremely safe.  Some star riders were missing; last week’s winner Malc Fraser Barry Jones and Dave Woods (KIngsnorth). But present today there was again runner up last time Mick Allen, who, believe or not, was riding with a broken collarbone and two cracked ribs, Richard Booth, team boss Mick Ives, Geoff Cooke was unable to start having agreed to present the prizes at a junior event further south, but still turned up to apologise on his way down to the event. I was pleased to welcome to the race another of my Belper colleagues Steve Moorcroft riding his first race ever and at 65 qualifies as an F cat.

Mick Allen riding with his injuries had confided in me that he was out to start fast to get away from the bunch to ensure a safer ride. True enough he attacked immediately the flag was dropped and was followed by Richard Booth and E cat Andy Jones.  Being a team mate of Mick I played the team card and waited for a reaction from the rest to chase but as usual there was a slow reaction and the gap soon became too great to cross solo. Eventually a counter was attempted after the front trio had become established. Three riders, Mike Wilson, Phil Rose (riding out of cat) and Pete Hudson went hard down the tailwind section and soon became established, to my shame I watched this and failed to react until it was too late. This then was the pattern of the race, the 3 leaders eventually lapping us in the bunch with about 4 laps to go. At the finish Richard Booth easily won the race from Andy with Mick unable to get out of the saddle to pull on the bars coming home third. The 3 chasers following shortly afterwards. Meanwhile back amongst the ‘laughing group’ Mick Ives and I were having a tussle trying to outfox rapid finisher Dave Gretton. We both tried several times at one time Mick doing a full lap solo, but Dave was too attentive. My last big effort into the wind before the final bend was doomed, taking it I saw out of the corner of my eye the dreaded blue and white Notts Velo jersey, it was my last throw of the dice and Dave immediately wound up his sprint and left me and the rest for dead.

Some outstanding rides today; Young Lady Clare Simon who rode with us last week at the Andy Hardy Memorial  Race, it’s amazing how one recognises riding styles, rode extremely well.  I must not forget to mention club colleague Steve Moorcroft. He’s been training with us for over a year now and certainly has the strength if not yet the racing brain (I’ve been racing for many years and still not fully developed it, as observed today). Steve finished third F cat in his first actual bike race.

I must also mention that Andy Donaldson enforces the out of category rider policy and pulled Phil Rose from contesting the sprint for 4th. in the race. Never mind Phil you’ll soon be racing against the fast lads and can demonstrate your class then.
